Healthcare CMO: 6 Steps to Develop a Marketing Strategy

In discussing customer relationship management (CRM) solutions with many marketing professionals I tend to think that marketing is the most overlooked component of the software. Not only is the software component overlooked but the idea of marketing seems to not be foremost in the minds of a lot of “Marketing” professionals. Many individuals whom I speak to say “we don’t market our product, it sells itself” or “we really don’t have a strong marketing department”.

Here are the 6 steps to developing a Marketing Strategy:

Market

Product

Person

Value Proposition

Action

Analysis

Laid Off By Pharma? Don't Worry

According to Lynn Brown, marketing vice president for Right Management, many of the industry's laid off workers are finding jobs at other pharma companies, or in jobs related to the industry, such as contract sales, research organizations, or the biotech sector.

Between January 2007 and March 2008, Right Management interviewed 1,282 pharma employees who were displaced from their jobs, and found that:

73 percent found new jobs at the same or higher pay scale

84 percent did not have to relocate to find new jobs

43 percent found new positions through networking

15 percent found new opportunities through the Internet

12 percent landed new careers through employment agencies or search firms

8 percent obtained new jobs by applying directly with their new employers

Microsoft Amalga Full Healthcare Information Technology System

Microsoft announced the Microsoft Amalga, the new family of Health Enterprise Systems. You can read the full press release on the microsoft.com web site.

The products included in the Amalga family are:

Microsoft Amalga. The new version of the product formerly known as Azyxxi, Amalga is part of a new software category called Unified Intelligence Systems that allows hospital enterprises to unlock the power of all their data sitting in isolated clinical, financial and administrative systems. Without replacing current systems, it offers an innovative way to capture, consolidate, store, access and quickly present data in meaningful ways for use by clinicians and executives of leading-edge institutions. Amalga is designed for hospitals and health systems that have invested in a diverse set of IT solutions.

Microsoft Amalga Hospital Information System (HIS). The new version of the product previously named Hospital 2000, Amalga HIS is a state-of-the-art, fully integrated hospital information system designed for developing and emerging markets. Amalga HIS is built around an electronic medical record (EMR) with complete patient and bed management, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology information system and picture archiving and communication system (RIS/PACS), pathology, financial accounting, materials management, and human resource systems.

Microsoft Amalga RIS/PACS. The new version of the product formerly known as GCS Amalga is now available as a stand-alone system as well as an integrated component of Amalga HIS. The integrated architecture means that a radiologist can use a single application to manipulate and study images and access the patient medical record. The workstation interface is optimized for radiologist workflow, including support for predefined templates, an intuitive report editor and voice recognition capabilities.

Here is the new revamped HSG web site and a new Amalga web site that contains detailed information about the three products.

The products included in the family are new versions of the products that we acquired over the last couple of years:

Cornerstone Solutions and CareVoyant Partner to Offer Complete Software Package to Long Term Care Facilities

Cornerstone Solutions is proud to announce our partnership with CareVoyant. Cornerstone Solutions is a provider of consulting and implementation services for Microsoft Dynamics GP. Microsoft Dynamics GP completes the financial protion of the total package that is needed by nursing homes, long term care facilities and home care.

For the past twelve years, CareVoyant (formerly known as InfoSys, Inc.) has embraced technological change and seized opportunities to develop integrated healthcare applications across vertical and horizontal markets. These efforts have resulted in comprehensive and integrated solutions that have transformed clinical, financial and administrative workflow for a wide range of ambulatory and post-acute healthcare providers.

CareVoyant's initial success was driven not by marketplace paradigms, but by early-adopter clients who quickly recognized and acted to take advantage of the company's client-centric development philosophy. These early clients saw potential in the original product's open architecture design, enterprise scalability and flexible billing

Microsoft's 5 Healthcare Trends to Watch

1. The end of health insurance as we know it. Or, perhaps, it is the return of health insurance as we used to know it. Employer-paid health insurance used to mean coverage for hospitalization. Even this came with a fairly high deductible. There was no coverage for outpatient doctor visits, lab work, X-rays, and medication. And we've all become accustomed to this over the years. The trend is now reversing itself as the economic pressures of global competition force employers to shift healthcare costs to their employees. This is giving rise to consumer directed healthcare and healthcare savings accounts, generating a profound ripple effect in the healthcare ecosystem.

2. Information everywhere. Widely accessible Wi-Fi and Wi-Max devices and a myriad of devices that take advantage of the bandwidth can transform the capability to access information at the point of care, and anywhere else it is needed. Consumers can benefit from advanced home monitoring systems, teleconsultations, personalized care, and individualized treatments.

3. Commoditization of healthcare services. As consumers are forced to pay more out of pocket for healthcare services and as information becomes more widely accessible, retail markets can emerge. Medical service providers can begin to compete more based on price, convenience, high tech, and high touch.

4. Coping with shortages of qualified professionals. Aging baby boomers are beginning to affect the healthcare system at the very time that labor shortages of providers and other healthcare workers are becoming more acute. Price pressures on the industry can demand lower-paid workers, causing more reliance on mid-level and low-level providers of service.

5. Worldwide access to the healthcare economy. Information technology can enable globalization of the healthcare economy. If medical services can be provided remotely, they will be. The phenomenon of medical tourism can grow as people facing higher deductible coverage or no coverage at all seek medical procedures at a lower cost.

Revenue Cycle Management and Financial Management Unite

Today's revenue cycle management joins analytical tools with cash flow to improve patient care and identify new reimbursement opportunities.

Revenue cycle management, which is used by hospitals, is increasingly being employed in physician practices to help reduce billing errors and speed up payment times.

Financial management programs today go beyond billing to help physicians improve patient care, identify underused revenue opportunities, and rein in administrative costs in an environment of shrinking reimbursements.

Revenue cycle management can:

Reduce denials

Increase reimbursements

Reduce compliance exposure

Increase customer satisfaction

Increase integration with other systems
